(Law)teria: A Creative Way to Give Back

The Hispanic Issues Section (HIS) of the State Bar of Texas will be hosting the third annual (Law)teria game night tomorrow, November 1st. In recent years, HIS’ (Law)teria, a fun take on the widely popular Mexican card game loteria, has raised over $90,000 benefiting legal aid thanks to sponsors and participants just like you. This year, all proceeds will be donated to Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) as we expand our services in new areas of Texas.

Join HIS and celebrity callers* tomorrow, November 1st at 5:30PM via Zoom for an exciting game of (Law)teria that includes door prizes and intermission entertainment!

How did HIS (Law)teria get its start?

The event was a result of the creative tactics people used to stay connected with friends and family during the peak of pandemic quarantine. Zoom book clubs, PowerPoint parties, and, game nights were at the center of everyone’s social life. Judge Victor Villarreal, Chair of the Hispanic Issues Section, told TRLA that he immediately loved the idea when it was first presented to him. He and Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF) Executive Director, Betty Balli Torres, aimed to replicate the popular loteria game night to include their target communities.

“(Law)teria indeed brought together our larger legal family statewide and broke then-set online legal fundraising efforts,” says Judge Villarreal. “In keeping true to HIS’ roots of respecting our past and recognizing those that blazed paths before us, (Law)teria brings together culture and tradition to provide for a legal need-access to justice for those with limited means to afford it.”

Why TRLA?

Unlike previous years which included numerous beneficiaries, TRLA has been chosen as the sole recipient of funds raised as we expand our services in Texas. HIS has decided it wants the proceeds to support the brand new TRLA office in Uvalde, TX – a community in desperate need of aid. TRLA and HIS of the State Bar of Texas are proud to serve its members to the fullest, with the help of your expert (Law)teria skills. As Judge Villareal said, “Who knew that providing access to justice could be so fun?”
