Half of a Century Serving his Community
We are sad to share that our longtime employee Raymundo López passed away on September 2nd. Raymundo joined TRLA’s Eagle Pass office in 1978 starting off as a Clerk and Receptionist and then a Paralegal in 1980, working with TRLA until April of this year.
A native of Eagle Pass, Raymundo was known for never saying no to a Social Security or unemployment case that he found in his hometown and was extremely passionate about his cases. In his work, he focused on public benefits, disability rights, and employment cases.
Raymundo served two years in the army during the Korean War. He served as a representative of Spanish-speaking G.I.’s and served on the Colonels Battalion Grievance Committee, explaining that it was his responsibility to “…expose to the colonels discrimination practices on and off the military compound.” After his service, Raymundo attended Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul Ross State University.
Before his work with TRLA Raymundo worked as a laborer with the Maverick County Road Department and the City of Eagle Pass Public Works Department. In the ’70s Raymundo was actively involved in “La Raza Unida” voting registration drive and was a member of “El Paso del Aguila Club,” a nonprofit civic organization that advocated for bilingual education, voters’ rights, and against ‘La Migra’ and police brutality. He was an avid fisherman and helped put together a committee of fishermen that helped keep the gates to the Eagle Pass Border Wall open 24/7.
We are so grateful for Raymundo’s dedication and service to the Eagle Pass community, and his advocacy for clients at TRLA. He will be missed.
