Twice a year, TRLA collaborates with San Antonio Legal Services Association (SALSA), Disability Rights Texas (DRTX), and St. Mary’s University Law School to host a virtual Alternatives to Guardianship Clinic where young people with disabilities who have turned 18 can have Supported Decision Making Agreements and Powers of Attorney drafted for them. Clients who qualify for this service are matched with a volunteer attorney and law student, and the documents are drafted for them for free!
Young people with intellectual disabilities are often pushed into restrictive guardianships because their family members are seeking ways to continue to help them when they become adults. The guardianship alternatives clinic helps people with disabilities and their families identify other legal options to help them keep their rights while receiving continued support from their loved ones as they navigate important decisions they face as adults.
